The Black Jaguar
The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth and as such, contains an incredible amount of biodiversity. One of the region’s rarest residents is the Black Jaguar. Recently, the notoriously elusive animal was spotted while swimming across a river in Southern Brazil. Carter Roberts, head of the World Wildlife Federation, and his crew shot the lucky video footage of the jaguar while they were aboard a boat crossing the river.
How rare was this sight? The Black Jaguar is considered a near-threatened species in Central and South America, and there are estimated to be only 600 of them left in the world. The World Wildlife Federation is sharing the footage to help bring awareness to their Amazon Region Protected Areas Program, which is a conservation effort that protects 150 million acres of the region in perpetuity.
