The food of the politely hungry, the gently ravenous, and the not-even-close-to-starving: tapas is a snack savior to all. But what even are they? If you’re going to love tapas as much as me, you should probably know the answer to this question.
The big answer is that tapas are an appetizer, a dish to start things off or a quick bite to eat at the 3:00 lull in the day.
The exact answer is a bit harder to find. Tapas can be cold or hot, big or small, a baguette with some cheese on it, or battered and fried squid. What makes tapas so hard to define also makes them glorious and fun. They are ever-changing but remain consistently delicious.
Here are some of my favourite tapas:
-Bacalao: salted cod loin sliced very thinly
-Olives: all of the shapes and all of the colours
-Calamari: squid
-Croquetas: fried goodness
-Patatas Bravas: potatoes made ten times more delicious with aioli
-Queso: just cheese on a plate
