Eco-Tourism in Costa Rica
One of Costa Rica’s hidden secrets is our eco-tourism ranch, a sustainability education centre located in a small rural town in the San Jose region of Costa Rica.
This small town boasts a population of 110 people, but the Ranch helps support local businesses and economy by accommodating hundred of visitors each year. Guests come to the ranch for workshops, apprenticeships or as school groups looking to learn more about environmental sustainability.
Ranch Life
The ranch is a permaculture farm that has a focus on food production. They have hens, hundreds of fruit trees, thousands of nitrogen-fixing trees, garden space, a nursery and various water and nutrient cycling systems. All with the goal to create stable, productive systems that provide for human needs, harmoniously integrating the land with its inhabitants.
During some of their workshops you can learn how to process many of the foods grown on the ranch including jackfruit, lemongrass, galangal, and hot peppers to name a few.
One of the highlights at the ranch is feasting on their delicious buffet style meals that use fruits from their own land and other crops from local farmers. If sticking to a local diet is important to you, this is the place to be!
Hiking
In this small town, you don’t need to travel far to experience amazing natural beauty. Within a short 30 minute hike you’ll find yourself swimming in some of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls and rivers.
Community
Within the community you can get involved in the local community by visiting their football field, library or soda. You can also check out the community centre for weekly Zumba classes!
Organic Chocolate
Have a sweet tooth? Visit the local organic chocolate farm!. This small family run business is the perfect place to learn how the sweet citrusy fruit inside the cacao pod can be transformed into mouth watering chocolate.
Whether you’re an avid adventurer or a relaxed traveler, everyone can find what they’re looking for; even if it’s as simple as resting in a hammock, in the tropical heat of Costa Rica, while reading a good book.
