  • Day 1: Arrival in Accra & Cultural Introduction

Stepping off the plane in Accra, the energy of Ghana immediately surrounds us—rhythmic drumbeats, vibrant markets, and the warm hospitality of the people. After meeting our guides, we set out to explore the capital, visiting Independence Square, a powerful symbol of Ghana’s liberation, and the Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum, where we learn about the country’s first president and his vision for a united Africa. In the afternoon, we head to Jamestown, one of Accra’s oldest districts, where colonial architecture stands alongside colorful street art and bustling fishing communities. A local storyteller shares the history of Ghana’s coastal trade and its lasting impact. Over a welcome dinner of jollof rice, grilled tilapia, and kelewele (spiced plantains), we discuss the upcoming days of cultural exchange and service-learning.

  • Day 2: Community Engagement & Traditional Drumming Workshop

Today, we immerse ourselves in the heart of a local village, where we begin our service-learning project. Depending on the needs of the community, we may assist with school renovations, sustainable farming initiatives, or youth mentorship programs. Working alongside locals fosters deep connections and a true appreciation for the strength of community life in Ghana. In the afternoon, we participate in a traditional drumming and dance workshop led by master musicians. We learn the significance of different rhythms in Ghanaian culture, from ceremonial calls to storytelling beats. As we move to the rhythm of the drums, we experience the profound role that music plays in uniting communities.

  • Day 3: Cape Coast Castle & The Legacy of the Slave Trade

We journey to Cape Coast, where history takes center stage. Our visit to Cape Coast Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a sobering but essential experience. Walking through the dungeons where enslaved Africans were held before being forced onto ships, we reflect on this painful chapter of history and its lasting global impact. Afterward, we visit a cultural center where scholars and local artists engage us in discussions on identity, resilience, and the importance of preserving history. We end the day at Elmina, Ghana’s oldest European-built town, where we explore the fishing harbor and watch as colorful boats return with the day’s catch.

  • Day 4: Kakum National Park & Canopy Walk Adventure

Today, we venture into Ghana’s lush rainforests at Kakum National Park. Here, we embark on the famous canopy walk, a series of suspension bridges hanging high above the jungle floor. Walking among the treetops, we take in panoramic views of the dense greenery while spotting monkeys, exotic birds, and even forest elephants below. Following the canopy walk, we meet with park conservationists who educate us on efforts to protect Ghana’s biodiversity. In the afternoon, we hike through the forest to learn about indigenous plants and their medicinal uses, gaining insight into the deep relationship between nature and Ghanaian traditions.

  • Day 5: Art, Markets & Cooking Ghanaian Cuisine

Back in Accra, we dive into Ghana’s thriving art scene with a visit to the Artists Alliance Gallery, home to contemporary Ghanaian art, sculptures, and textiles. Next, we navigate the bustling Makola Market, where vendors sell everything from kente cloth to handcrafted beads. After gathering fresh ingredients from the market, we take part in a Ghanaian cooking class. Under the guidance of local chefs, we prepare classic dishes like fufu and groundnut soup, learning the techniques and flavors that make Ghanaian cuisine unique. We enjoy our meal together, reflecting on the ways food connects culture, history, and community.

  • Day 6: Farewell & Reflection at Labadi Beach

On our final day, we take time for reflection at Labadi Beach, where the Atlantic waves meet Ghana’s golden shores. We discuss our most impactful experiences, the lessons learned, and how we can carry Ghana’s spirit of community and resilience forward. Before heading to the airport, we enjoy a farewell meal, savoring one last taste of Ghanaian hospitality. As we depart, we take with us memories of warm welcomes, powerful histories, and a deeper understanding of this extraordinary country.
