Walk the path of a 5,200-year-old volcanic eruption and witness the incredible colors and formations left behind by the flowing lava. It’s an unforgettable underground journey that reveals the powerful forces shaping this incredible island. From renewable energy to volcanic exploration, today is all about the natural forces that make Iceland truly unique.

  • Day 4: Waterfalls, Volcanoes & Coastal Wonders on the Way to Skaftafell

Today, our journey takes us southeast toward the stunning Skaftafell National Park—but the adventure begins long before we arrive! As we travel together as a group, we’ll make several incredible stops along Iceland’s dramatic southern coast, with each destination offering a deeper look into the country’s powerful natural forces. Our first highlight is the Thjórsá River, Iceland’s longest river, which winds its way through breathtaking volcanic landscapes. Next, we’ll pass by the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano, whose 2010 eruption made headlines around the world for disrupting European air travel. Along the way, we’ll stop to examine the effects of a jökulhlaup—a glacial outburst flood caused by the eruption. Students will see firsthand the landscape shaped by these dramatic and powerful natural events. Then it’s on to Skógafoss, one of Iceland’s most iconic waterfalls. Feel the spray as you stand at the base, or climb the nearby staircase for a breathtaking view from above—it’s an unforgettable photo opportunity! After lunch, we head to Dyrhólaey, a towering 120-meter-high coastal promontory formed by an ancient underwater eruption.
