Mexico Culinary Tour

Day 1: Travel to Mexico!

Board overnight flight to Mexico City.

Day 2: Coyoacan Food Tour, Bazaar Sabado, San Angel Exploration

Prepare for immediate immersion into the bustling and vibrant city life of Mexico City. Enjoy a guided food tour of Coyoacan with Mexico City’s highest rated and most sought after food guide. Pass through various neighbourhoods, markets and eateries sampling snacks, drinks, and finishing with a delicious lunch. Head nearby to the leafy suburb of San Ángel, to the Plaza San Jacinto with its famed Bazar Sábado, full of local artisans’ ceramics, jewelry, textiles and more.

Day 3: Chapultepec Park, Museo Nacional de Antropologia, Museum of Maize

Visit the incomparable Museo Nacional de Antropologia, for its collections that showcase the many civilizations and cultures of Mexico through the ages. Walk through the Chapultepec Park, passing by the Lake of Chapultepec and its Fountain of Nymphs and Aztec Gods. Explore the history and diversity of Mexico’s most prestigious and nourishing crop – corn, at Cencalli Maize Museum.

Day 4: Teotihuacán Pyramids & Museum

Prepare to be blown away by architectural feats at the archaeological site of Teotihuacán. Visit the Pyramid of the Sun, the third largest pyramid in the world, the Palace of Quetzlpapalotl, the Pyramid of the Moon and the Temple of the Feathered Serpent. Afterwards, visit the museum to learn more about the significance of each site.

Day 5: Palacio Nacional, Palacio de Bellas Artes, Museo de Chocolate

Head into the Historic Centre to see the Palacio Nacional, home to the president of Mexico. Take in the bustling atmosphere around the Zócalo, the main square, and explore the museums, churches and Palacio de Bellas Artes, which are all nearby. Visit the vibrant Colonia Juarez, home to MUCHO – Museo de Chocolate which details the history of cacao through interactive exhibits in an early 20th Century colonial mansion.

Day 6: Travel to Mexico City to Oaxaca

Welcome to Oaxaca! A UNESCO World Heritage site, Oaxaca is a place bursting with colour, history, and vibrant Indigenous traditions. In the following days, explore these themes through cuisine, meeting artisans and interacting with the local community.

Day 7: History

Embark on a walking city tour, covering the Plaza Principal, Santo Domingo Church, Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca, and more. Visit Mercado 20 de Noviembre, and the famed Pasillo de Humo (Hall of Smoke) or Pasillo de Carnes Asadas, an experience that’s just as hectic, unique and unforgettable as it is delicious.

Day 8: Chocolate & Corn

Discover the mysterious path of the humble cacao bean and the corn seed from their beginnings to its modern incarnations today and learn why they are the Mesoamerican food of the gods.

Day 9: Let’s make some mole!

Explore the colourful markets in the Zócalo (central plaza) area. Learn about Mexican handicrafts at the Mercado de Artesanias and sample Oaxacan cheese, chapulines (grasshoppers), chocolate, and Mole at Mercado Benito Juárez. Learn about the production process, ingredients, and history of the famous seven moles of Oaxaca. Visit a traditional chocolate mill to see — and taste — how they process this Oaxacan specialty.

Day 10: Teotitlan del Valle - Weaving & Eating

Head out of the city to the famous weaving village of Teotitlán, a community with pre-colonial roots. Visit the cooperative and learn some of their skills in spinning and weaving yarn, traditional cooking and culinary methods, and medicinal plants found in the surrounding areas. Visit a local family of esteemed weavers, dancers, and chefs to taste traditional Zapotec cooking and dive deep into the culture of traditional chocolate drinks of the village.

Day 11: Ceramics Workshop

Visit to the studio of master potters and ceramicists in the pottery town of Atzompa. Learn about the process of turning clay into ceramics, the cooking traditions and stories of the local Zapotec people.

Day 12: Hierve el Agua

Depart to the petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua. This natural wonder was created by mineral water that pushed through karstic limestone, leading to two pools full of calcium carbonate, magnesium, and sulphur.

Day 13: Return Home

Departure back home.
