Day 1:
Arrival
Flight to Quito Peru
Day 2:
Boarding
Meet in Iquitos, Peru, and embark on a journey to the town of Omaguas. From there, board a chartered passenger boat to reach the riverboat, which is moored in the heart of the Amazon. Settle into your accommodations and get acquainted with the crew and fellow travelers.
Day 3-6:
Wildlife Monitoring and Research
- Dolphin Census: Participate in a dolphin census, observing and documenting the population of pink river dolphins along the Amazon. Learn about their behaviors and the challenges they face.
- Terrestrial Transect: Engage in guided hikes through the rainforest, conducting terrestrial transects to study and document flora and fauna diversity. Assist researchers in data collection for ongoing conservation projects.
- Wading Bird and Macaw Monitoring: Spend time observing and monitoring wading birds and vibrant macaws. Learn about their nesting habits, behaviors, and ecological significance within the Amazon ecosystem.
Day 7-8:
Ecological Surveys and Night Activities
- Fishing Census: Join a fishing census to understand local fishing practices and their impact on the ecosystem. Learn about sustainable fishing methods and their importance in preserving aquatic life.
- Caiman Spotting: Embark on nocturnal expeditions to spot caimans in their natural habitat. Observe their behavior and contribute to caiman population surveys.
- Fishing Bat Surveys and Canoe-based Surveys: Participate in surveys focused on fishing bats and other nocturnal wildlife, utilizing canoes to navigate smaller waterways for a closer look at the diverse ecosystem during the night.
Day 9:
Cultural Interaction and Return
- Visit to the Cocama Community: Experience the rich culture of the local Cocama community. Engage in cultural exchanges, learn about their traditions, and gain insights into their way of life.
- Return to Omaguas and Iquitos: Travel back to Omaguas and conclude your journey by returning to Iquitos. Reflect on your experiences and newfound knowledge of the Amazon’s biodiversity and the significance of conservation efforts.
