Paris Activities
MORNING
This morning we will wake up early to discover the Louvre. Originally constructed as a fortress on orders from Phillip II, you will find the museum in the Louvre Palace. We will explore the largest and possibly most famous museum in the world! Highlights will include medieval ruins, the sculpture gallery and of course, the Mona Lisa.
AFTERNOON
In the afternoon we will have time to explore the bohemian neighbourhood of Montmartre, historically home to the studios of famous artists, including Salvador Dali, Calude Monet, Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh. This is a good opportunity to buy some souvenirs for our friends and family back home.
EVENING
Before dinner we will get acquainted with Paris on a walking tour with a local guide. We will see famous monuments and sites with educational (and fun!) commentary, and get a real sense of Parisian culture. Stops on the tour may include the Alexander III Bridge, Tuileries Gardens, the Louvre Museum, Les Invalides, Napoléon’s Tomb, and Place de la Concorde. After we have been thoroughly oriented in the city, we will walk the length of the iconic Avenue des Champs Élysées and arrive at L’Arc de Triomphe, an honorary monument for those who fought in the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic wars. This day will be an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the local atmosphere and attractions of the area. Parlez-vous Francais? Enjoy dinner as a group after an incredible day of exploring Paris together.

In the 1960s, artists wanting to beautify their surroundings began painting murals on the façades of buildings in this industrial district. In recent years, thanks to backing from the 13th arrondissement town hall and local art galleries, some parts of the district have metamorphosed into veritable open-air museums. There are up to 26 giant works in Boulevard Vincent Auriol alone. We will explore the area’s most noteworthy artworks

EVENING
Before dinner we will visit Rivoli 59. After Crédit Lyonnais abandoned the space, a group of artists called “KGB” (standing for Kalex, Gaspard, and Bruno) claimed the building in 1999. Despite the deteriorating structure, the group was soon hosting exhibitions and performances under the name “Chez Robert, électrons libres.” Although the space was illegally occupied, by 2001 it was getting 40,000 visitors a year, making it the third most visited center for contemporary art in Paris.
In 2006, the city of Paris acquired 59 Rivoli as part of its effort to bring legality and building safety to popular illegal artist squats. After renovations, it reopened in 2009 with studios for over 30 artists who pay minimal rent. The six stories of 59 Rivoli and its exhibits are free and open to the public. While the wild art that once covered the facade is now much more tame, there are still whimsical and expressive installations that turn up on the stone exterior.
